JOHN DANNREUTHER AND THE 1808 QUARTER EAGLE

In last week's issue I highlighted a few choice lots from the upcoming Pogue Sale. One of them, an 1808 Capped Bust Left Quarter Eagle, had an intriguing note in the lot description: "... John Dannreuther (who broke his arm while accompanying Jimmy Hayes to buy this coin in 1983; luckily, the seller, Dr. Herbert Ketterman, was capable of setting the fracture).". So I asked John - what the heck happened? -Editor

John Dannreuther writes:

1808 Capped Bust Left Quarter Eagle obverse On the way to the Central States show, Jimmy Hayes asked me to meet him in Kansas City (I had to go through there to get to the show in Cedar Rapids), so I arranged several hours for the layover. I met Jimmy at the airport and Dr. Ketterman picked us up in his Thunderbird. We went to his bank and Jimmy gave them a cashier's check and they delivered the gem 1808 quarter eagle.

Dr. Ketterman said he wanted to show us some other coins, so we headed to another bank. Once there, we viewed his gem 1796 dime, a superb cameo Proof 1831 quarter eagle, and another coin that I don't remember. As we were leaving the bank, one of the famous Kansas City downpours was happening. I slipped on the sidewalk and my elbow broke my fall. The fall broke my elbow, too!

After getting in the car, I nearly passed out from the pain, so we went to Dr. Ketterman's office, took an X-ray, where he noted it was a clean break. He put it in a cast, then took us to the airport and we headed to Cedar Rapids for the Central States coin show. I was in the cast for a few weeks and, of course, had a great story.

Ouch! Talk about giving your all for numismatics! That must have hurt. Does anyone else have a story about how they or a fellow collector was injured while indulging in the hobby? -Editor
