QUERY: GEORGIA CIVIL WAR OVERPRINTED SCRIP NOTES

At Whitman Publishing, LLC, Caitlyn Trautwein is editor, and Q. David Bowers is author of the series of books describing state-chartered notes of the 1782-1866 period. The six New England states—Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut—have been completed. Large-format color-illustrated hardbound books are available from the Whitman website or from your favorite currency or book dealer. Caitlyn and Dave are now busy with the next volume, which will include North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. Of all these states, the bank-note history of Georgia is far and away the most complex. Now comes a query from Dave Bowers: -Editor

Dave writes:

It is well-known that in the South during the Civil War there was a shortage of paper for printing. Many bank notes and scrip notes were printed on the blank backs of four-subject currency sheets of banks no longer in business. Such notes have the new or current note on the face, and on the back is a section from an earlier unused sheet.

Now comes the question: In a number of instances a bank that was still in operation during the Civil War printed small-denomination notes on the blank backs of sheets of its own high-denomination notes. As inflation was rampant, it seems to me that cutting apart the original sheets to use high-denomination notes would have made more sense.

Great question. Can anyone help? -Editor
