Dick Johnson submitted these thoughts on Evelyn Newman. Thanks. -Editor
As a college student at Washington University in St. Louis I visited the Newman home many times. While Eric and I discussed numismatic
books Evelyn joined in several of those meetings. She was always gracious and a lovely lady. I got the impression she supported Eric's life-long
interest in numismatics.
I always stayed in touch with Eric. Years later I was traveling through St. Louis and was a house guest of the Newman's. My family
was with me including an infant son. I remember Eric serving ice cream before we all retired. But it was the next morning in Evelyn's
kitchen that my son first used a spoon to eat that breakfast by himself.. Somehow I felt even he recognized the importance of where we were
and the hospitality of the Newman's. More recently I worked with Evelyn on Eric's Centennial Medal for the Rittenhouse Society. She furnished photographs and
suggestions. We had several conversations. At that time Eric used a walker to aid moving around, as did I. Evelyn and I exchanged
suggestions of other devices -- and their sources -- to aid us in our conditions. In my last conversation with Eric he gave me a report of Evelyn's and his trip to New Guinea, I will long remember Eric's
Gracious Lady. To read the earlier E-Sylum article, see:
