NEW BOOK: THE COINAGE OF ANCIENT THASOS

Classical Numismatic Group is proud to announce the publication of an important new reference work for the study of ancient Greek numismatics: The Coinage of Ancient Thasos: A Guide for Collectors Featuring "The Titan Collection" by William E. Daehn, with a Foreword by Nina Hadzhieva, PhD.

This comprehensive new volume offers the most detailed collector-focused study to date of the coinage of the Aegean island of Thasos, tracing its numismatic history from the island's early colonization in the seventh century BCE through its incorporation into the Roman Empire.

Drawing on both decades of personal experience and the latest scholarship—including the work of Georges Le Rider, Olivier Picard, François de Callataÿ, Ilya Prokopov, and others—Daehn provides a major synthesis of research, including important studies previously published only in French or in difficult-to-access journals.

This publication presents:

• A catalogue of 66 coin-types traditionally attributed to Thasos—some previously unpublished—from their beginning circa 530 BCE until the end of coinage at Thasos under the Roman Emperor Geta in 217 CE. Based on the latest research, 14 of these types are now known to belong to a common coinage system, produced by multiple communities and circulating in what the author calls the Thracian Monetary Zone. The remaining 52 types belong to Thasos.
• All known varieties of each type are listed, including 197 from The Titan Collection—perhaps the most comprehensive private collection of these coins, and supplemented by coins from museum collections and the private market, resulting in 408 distinct listed varieties.
• A thorough bibliography of important references for the history and coinage of Thasos is included, as well as a guide to commonly seen forgeries.
