The Paper Republic is back in print – Now in its Third Edition! I took delivery of these copies on August 4, 2026 after months of turning down requests for purchase because I had sold them all. This first book focused on the economic, financial, and political challenges of Texas from the colonial period through annexation and is richly illustrated in full color on high-quality paper. All copies are hardback with a high-resolution book jacket. It is a must for collectors of Republic of Texas paper money. Aside from its contribution to Texas numismatics, it was the winner of four literary awards:
"Summerfield G. Roberts award, 2009" The award is given for the entry which "best portrays the spirit, character, strength, and deeds of those who lived in the Republic of Texas."
"Best Specialized Book on U.S. Paper Money" by the Numismatic Literary Guild at the ANA World's Fair of Money in Boston, August 2010.
San Antonio Conservation Society citation for an outstanding contribution towards "the preservation of historic buildings, objects, places and customs relating to the history of Texas. March 25, 2011.
Catherine Munson Foster Memorial Award for Literature, by the Brazoria County Historical Museum for "a significant literary contribution through a factual, fictional or folklore publication to the public's understanding of Texas or Texans. Angleton, Texas, April 29, 2012.
New copies are $60 each + $7.34 shipping. Wholesale pricing is $240 for boxes of eight, plus shipping. Copies are available in the Houston area at US Coins and Jewelry, Maida's Belts and Buckles, The Taste of Texas Restaurant, The Antiquarium, and the San Jacinto Museum of History.
Individual copies are also available through the author at
mercury225@sbcglobal.net.
E-Sylum readers love history, and Jim has written a couple non-fiction history books of note, both of which I understand include some numismatic references.

James P. Bevill is an independent historian and award-winning author whose works explore pivotal moments in American and global history. His books form the foundation of widely praised presentations, and he is frequently invited to serve as a keynote speaker for historic and academic organizations. While most visitors to this site may be familiar with his expertise in Texas history and numismatics, in recent years, Bevill has branched out into compelling non-fiction stories on World War II in China and the earliest CIA and American involvement in the French Indochina war and the creation of South Vietnam which followed.
Bevill's second book, Blackboards and Bomb Shelters, The Perilous Journey of Americans in China during World War II, follows the lives of three Yale graduates and their unlikely paths of public service in Nationalist China during the Japanese occupation.
His most recent book is Spies in Saigon, CIA Covert Operations in French Indochina and South Vietnam, 1950-1963, and vividly reveals the surprising depth of CIA and American involvement during the French War and the creation of the first Republic of Vietnam which followed.
More information on these two titles can be found below. Professionally, Bevill is a Senior Vice President at UBS Financial Services in the River Oaks office. He lives in Houston with his wife, Jodie Springer Bevill.
