Tom Sparks contributed a nice article to the August 20, 2026 MPC Gram about a really interesting atomic age souvenir - a Bikini (Atoll) Nightmare Short Snorter. We're republishing it here with permission. Thank you.

Here are images of the U.S. Army Air Forces Air Transport Command Short Snorter with reference to "Bikini (Atoll) Nightmare" that I shared at the ANA Summer Seminar.
This certificate was issued to Colonel John K. Hester, AC, on 30 June 1946 for crossing the International Dateline.
It is signed by the following who were traveling together as part of an official global military inspection trip that coincided with Operation Crossroads, the historic postwar atomic bomb tests at Bikini Atoll:
-
Robert E. Hannegan (Postmaster General)
-
General George C. Kenney, USAF (Commanding General Strategic Air Command)
-
Senator Millard E. Tydings (Maryland, coauthor of the Tydings-McDuffie Philippine Independence Act)
-
Lieutenant General Ennis C. Whitehead, USAF (Commanding General Pacific Air Command US Army)
-
Major General John K. Cannon, USAF (Commanding General US Army Air Forces Training Command)
-
(undecipherable)
-
George G. Carey, Jr. (Deputy Director CIA)
-
Colonel Harold W. Bowman, USAF (U.S. Strategic Air Forces Chief of Staff for Public Relations)
-
Colonel John K. Hester, USAF
-
(undecipherable)
-
Gael Sullivan (Assistant Postmaster General)
-
W. Stuart Symington (Assistant Secretary of War for Air)
I acquired this a few years ago from Shawn Finley.
