The new edition, entitled Venice through medals. The nineteenth century, is the result of extensive research by Professor Leonardo Mezzaroba , with contributions from Piero Voltolina (1930-2005) and Meri Beni Voltolina. Libra Media & Services, the publishing house of CN Cronaca Numismtica , has released it.

In 544 A4 pages, printed entirely in color and richly illustrated, the author continues, both conceptually and concretely, The History of Venice Through Medals, a work to which Voltolina himself devoted so much energy, culminating in the publication of three weighty volumes. Those volumes, however, were interrupted on May 12, 1797, when the Great Council met for the last time in the Doge's Palace. With Napoleon's armies at the gates, it declared the Most Serene Republic of Venice collapsed , and with it, the last Doge, Ludovico Manin.

For Venice, the nineteenth century, after the French , saw the arrival of the Austrians , the brief freedom of the revolutionary two-year period of 1848-1849 , the new Habsburg rule, and finally, in 1866, the arrival of the newborn Italian nation . This century, full of upheavals, but also of progress and important innovations, represents the period of investigation of the volume by Leonardo Mezzaroba which, writes the editor Roberto Ganganelli in the preface , casts "a detailed and timely look at the many historical and social changes, major events and pages of micro-history, associative realities and demonstrations that have punctuated the daily life of Venice and the lives of its citizens."

Thanks to a rigorous and systematic analysis of the materials (starting with the fundamental Voltolina Collection itself), the bibliography and the archival sources, Mezzaroba lists over four hundred types of material evidence, unique, extremely rare or mass-produced metal objects and often small formats (not only medals but also plaques, badges and honours) that tell the story of Venice in the 19th century.

An extensive bibliography concludes the volume , and includes not only medal and numismatic texts, nor only the "primary" historical sources for nineteenth-century Venice, but also a significant number of gazettes, period magazines, and documents that testify to the quality and depth of Leonardo Mezzaroba's research work.
