Hugo Vanhoudt and John Sanders have published a new book on the silver coinage of Belgium, Luxembourg and The Netherlands for the period of about 1500 until the end of the French occupation (1815). To complete the overview of the silver coinage of the Low Countries, the silver coinage of the Dutch
Overseas Territories is included.

The Silver Coinage of the Low Countries
by Hugo Vanhoudt and John Saunders.
In 1967, Mr A. Delmonte wrote in the foreword to his book The Silver Benelux that since
the end of the 15th century, silver was available in larger quantities primarily thanks to
discoveries in the Americas. This led to the production of heavier silver coins all over the
world. His book and the overview of the heavy silver coins of the Benelux was intended
to support the knowledge of the collectors.
The book The Silver Coinage of the Low Countries covers the period from the 16th
century until the end of the French period and describes all the types related to the Low
countries. More than 300 years of silver coinage delivers a precious, artistic and
attractive historical document to everyone's eye. Especially for local history, these silver
coins can represent a story of wars, international contacts and exceptional economic
prosperity as well as hard times.
This book is designed for collectors and dealers. It gives an overview of all types of silver
coins that have been produced in the Low Countries and the Overseas territories over
the period from about 1500 until 1815. The demarcation of the scope and the material
has led to the title The Silver Coinage of the Low Countries. The borders of countries
and regions have undergone major changes during this period, as a result of which the
inclusion or exclusion of certain coins has sometimes been arbitrary. The Low Countries
refer to the historical areas that were under the influence of the local rulers mainly on
the current territory of the Benelux (Belgium, The Netherlands and Luxembourg) and
some in the northern part of France. On the other hand, the Overseas territories are also
included to complete the overview.
The most important information is given for each type of coin or silver strike: the
province or issuing authority, denomination, mint, a picture or line drawing of the coin, a
brief description of the obverse and the reverse design, the complete legends of the coin
pictured, dates known, rarity, and price estimates. Collecting the images of some
prestigious coins and of the beautiful but extremely rare oU-metal strikes in silver was
quite a challenge on its own.
