WAYNE'S NUMISMATIC DIARY: SEPTEMBER 20, 2026

Tuesday, September 15th was the meeting night of my Northern Virginia numismatic social group Nummis Nova. Wayne Herndon was our host at the Lazy Dog Restaurant in Fairfax. Other attendees included Mike Packard, Mike Markowitz and his guest Jim Sims, Jon Radel, Steve Bishop, Erik Douglas and Julian Leidman. I didn't get a group shot, but here are some of my photos.

Wayne's Numismatic Literature
I usually bring along some numismatic literature. Here are two books I purchased in the Numismatic Bibliomania Society's Charity Auction at last month's Pittsburgh ANA.

I had sold the Anderson book with my numismatic library, but got this replacement copy at a fair price. The St. Patrick's Coinage book was an impulse purchase - I was pretty sure I didn't already have a copy, and when I brought it home... nope, already got it. [Don't tell me that's never happened to you, bibliophiles!] So now this one's for sale, everyone!

Virginia Obsolete Paper
I've been casually collecting obsolete paper money from my adopted state of Virginia, mostly Civil War era, and mostly from the nearby town of Leesburg. I picked up two notes from different sellers at the ANA. The first one matches neither of my main criteria, but it's from Winchester where my friend Eric Schena lives and I bought it in case he didn't have one. He didn't, at least not until he bought an example of the same note during the same show. Well, I'll still happy to add it to my collection.

The second note is from another nearby town, Charles Town, WV. At the time this note was issued, it was part of Virginia. Portions of the Confederate state of Virginia occupied by Union forces seceded and joined the Union in 1863.

Topics at my end of the table included the Trump Dollar (someone brought one along), the recent ANA convention, the Tyrant Collection, the John Beck collection, and 1792 Half Dismes - Wayne Herndon recently sold one, and bought another.

It was another great evening of good food, drinks, and numismatic fellowship. 'Till next time!
