E-Auction 54, closing Wednesday, November 18th 2026, is online now! Print copies were mailed last week. If you are not on our mailing list and would like a copy, please let us know.
Two of the collections in this catalog reflect the time, effort, and expense of seriously collecting a specific series. The Peter Bartlett collection of ancient Greek coins with remarkable coverage of the earliest coinage at one end of the spectrum. And the collection representing 2300 years of English coinage, Celts to Windsors, that can be found in the British section of the sale represents an economical but effective approach.
The Bartlett Collection shows the time, the expertise, the focus, and the financial strength needed to assemble a world-class collection. The collection stands as nearly definitive for the earliest coins issued, in the 7th Century B.C. in Asia Minor.
The English history collection was put together on a budget by purchasing examples with a problem or two, (or more, in the case of the Alfred the Great penny), smaller denominations like pennies for the two Richards (II and III), individual Maundy pieces, worn milled pieces, and an occasional splurge like the PAX penny of Harold II. The collector's approach was creative and thoughtful, and the 2300 years of history are well represented.
The ancient section is extensive featuring many early issues from the Peter Bartlett Collection, an interesting and broad range of Greek silver and bronze issues from Magna Graecia, and also Baktria. The Roman section includes some appealing and collectible Roman Republican, along with select denarii and a small high grade collection of the Consecratio issues of Trajan Decius, featuring some of his notable predecessors.
The British Isles are well represented by a number of early Celtic and British hammered, and a strong section of D&H tokens with a number of high grade (MS64 and up) tokens consigned by two different collectors.
The auction ends with a select mix of European and United States coins.
We often wonder what we will end up with when we start thinking about our catalogs a few months before actually assembling and writing. By the time the process is over and the catalog is sent out we've had a bit of a numismatic adventure with consignments coming in, complemented by material we have from previous acquisitions, and we realize that creating an interesting catalog is a new growth process every time we complete this effort.
Thank you for your interest. Best wishes for the coming holiday seasons.
