KOLBE & FANNING SALE 178 RESULTS

The auction of the numismatic library formed by Robert A. Schuman, M.D., held on Saturday, September 26, by Kolbe & Fanning Numismatic Booksellers, was a great success, with many exceptional results. The total sale results were about 160% of the pre-sale estimate. The Schuman Library focused on numismatics of the United States, and was perhaps most notable for its exceptional photographically illustrated auction catalogues and its holdings of rare and desirable works on large cents and Hard Times Tokens.

Lots 7

Lot 7: J.N.T. Levick's annotated copy of Frank Dewette Andrews's 1881 first edition of his study on middle- and late-date large cents brought a record $24,000

Lots 41 and 47

Lot 41: a fine example of S.H. & H. Chapman's rare photographically plated 1905 catalogue of the Charles Morris collection brought $16,800

Lot 47: John J. Ford, Jr.'s example of the rare plated edition of S.H. Chapman's 1909 catalogue of the Charles Gordon Zug collection sold for $19,200

Lots 132 and 152

Lot 132: Tom Elder's 1911 catalogue of the William H. Woodin collection, one of a few issued with 18 photographic plates, realized $10,800

Lot 152: Ford's example of Tom Elder's 1920 catalogue of the Craig Clare collection, one of only a few copies issued with 13 photographic plates, sold for $13,200

Lots 154 and 155

Lot 154: Elder's 1921 catalogue of the Lynch, Walker & Tilden collections, with the complete complement of 22 photographic plates, brought $10,800

Lot 155: the photographically illustrated example of Elder's 1921 catalogue of the Lewis C. Gehring collection, with 19 plates, realized $15,600

Lot 158: the very rare 1926 Elder Catalogue of the G.W. Lee collection of United States large cents, with 3 photographic plates, brought $10,200.

As can be seen, the sale was dominated by Schuman's collection of classic photographically illustrated auction catalogues of the period from before the Second World War. These catalogues, always popular, have seen renewed interest in recent years, with particularly rare catalogues bringing very strong prices. Condition is also a priority of today's collectors, and Bob Schuman was known for emphasizing condition at a time when many collectors considered it a secondary concern. This emphasis on condition and rarity paid off in Saturday's sale.
